Summer Visitors--- Green Herons

It seems that every summer we have some sort of unusual critter visit us. Some stay a short while and others spend the summer with us. This years visitors is a small family of Green Herons. They nest in the oaks at the back of our lot and appear to feed at the neighboring ponds and creeks. At least so far they have left my little fish pond alone and hopefully they will continue to. This is either a female or a young male that hasn't developed his colors yet. It is the one that allowed me take 100s of photos before it flew off .
The garden is coming along and the flowers are looking better. I had to pull up all the green beans due to some sort of blight. But I'll plant more in a different spot and hope for the best .

I literally have hundreds of photos of these Green Herons. They are smaller than the Blue Heron that every one knows about and are little comics that can entertain for hours.
Here are a couple of shots of the parents after the chicks flew the nest.

Things are always happening around here :)

  1. LOVE those green herons, we don't have them here at all :( I would love to see them 'for real'. Thanks for sharing the lovely photos again. Hugs, Valerie

  2. I've seen the big heron at a pond nearby, but never saw them being comical, I think yours are something special. Happy New Year

  3. Like Valerie, I've never seen a green heron, either. I saw blue herons in Nebraska in a big protected marshland, but I've never seen them where I live. I think our snow geese probably scare them off (grin).

Sorry I'm late visiting, but I guess I could be called vintage today, too! Thanks for sharing this genuinely fun post as your Second look on the 2nd.

  4. I've never seen birds like that in a tree...only standing in the water. Very interesting! Thanks for the look back!

  6. Enjoy seeing the Herons! We have a few grey cranes around around our lake, but I've never seen a green heron. Like Halle, I've never seen "water birds" in trees either!

  7. Happy New Year Carol, I've never seen Herons, of either color, except in pictures. Sounds like they are fun to watch, some birds are really funny. I have two Dove that hang around my yard, but they really are peaceful birds.
    Thanks for sharing....errrr....re-sharing this post.
